A - H ABSTINENCE DEFINITIONS

                                                R.I.S.E. To Your Dreams Curriculum correlated to 8-point Definition of Abstinence-only Education                                                                   

 

R.I.S.E. TO YOUR Dreams is an abstinence-only curriculum used primarily in grades 7 and above.  The entire R.I.S.E. Curriculum is based on the A-H guidelines with the abstinence-only information being the standard.  There are certain segments that address each guideline specifically.  RI.S.E. To Your Dreams can be used in a three day seminar, or a multiple session course of six weeks, eight weeks, or twelve-weeks. For the purpose of this summary, the Three Day seminar will be used.

 

(A) has as its exclusive purpose, teaching there are social, psychological, and health gains to be realized by abstaining from sexual activity:

 

Session 1 – 3: Using stories, discussion and PowerPoint Slides, on page 1 and 2 (Slides 1 & 2) goals and dreams are explored in context to the gains that are realized by abstaining from sexual activity. Pages 6-7 (Slides 7-10)use the acronym R (responsibility) + I (integrity) S + (self-control) =E (empowerment as the basis for the youth’s foundation for life, again reinforcing the gains to be realized by abstaining.

Session 4 – 9: Using stories, discussion and PowerPoint Slides, on pages 21-23 (Slides 22-25) psychological benefits of not being a single parent are explored, the difference between love and lust are demonstrated and the Heart Story on page 50 is told.

Session 10: The Potter & Vase story/demonstration/video on pages 32-33 (Slides 46-52 and Video Good Life Choices); benefits of saving your heart for your mate and choosing abstinence, page 33 (Slides 53-54); benefits of abstinence page 34 (Slides 55-56).

 

B) teaches that abstinence from sexual activity outside marriage as the expected standard for all school age children:

 

Session 1 – 3: Page 1 (Slide 1) Introduction emphasizes that abstinence is expected from all school age children.

Session 4 – 9: Pages 11-12 (Slide 12), Pages 21-23 (Slides 22-25) psychological benefits of not being a single parent are explored, the difference between love and lust are demonstrated and the Heart Story on page 50 is told.

Session 10: Pages 31-34 (Slides 42-56) What to do, Say no to pressure, The Potter & Vase (story/demonstration/video) Benefits of Abstinence.

 

(C) teaches that abstinence from sexual activity is the only certain way to avoid out-of-wedlock pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and other associated health problems:

 

Session 1 – 3: Page 1, (Slide 1) Introduction; Page 8 (Slide 10) Empowerment;

Session 4 – 9: Page 17 (Slide 17) Internal pressures Page 40, story of Heather; Pages 22-23 (Slide 25) Consequences of  Sex outside of marriage.

Session 10: Pages 24-30 (Slides 26-40) Sexually Transmitted Diseases.

 

(D) teaches that a mutually faithful monogamous relationship in context of marriage is the expected standard of human sexuality:

 

Sessions 1 – 3: Page 1 and 2 (Slides 1-2) In introduction and plans for the future.

Session 4 – 9: Page 12 (Slide 13) Social needs

Session 10: Page 31 (Slide 42) Say No to pressure; Page 35 (Slide 54-56) Benefits of Abstinence.

(E) teaches that sexual activity outside of the context of marriage is likely to have harmful psychological and physical effects:

 

Sessions 1 – 3: Page2 (Slide 2) Realizing your dreams; Page 8 (Slide 10) Empowerment

Session 4 – 9: Page 12 (slide 13) Social needs, Page 17 (Slide 17) Internal Pressure, Pages 19-23 (Slides 20-25) Outside Influences, Age of Dating Chart, teen/single parenting, Lust or Love, Consequences of Sex outside of marriage.

Session 10: Pages 24-30 (Slides 26-40) Sexually Transmitted Diseases; Pages 38-51, Stories and games regarding sexual activity outside of marriage

 

(F) teaches that bearing children out- of-wedlock is likely to have harmful consequences for the child, the child’s parents, and society.

(G) that young people need to know how to reject sexual advances and how alcohol and drug use increases vulnerability to sexual advances,

Session 4 – 9: Page 11 (Slide 12) Mind, Will & Body; Page 19 (Slide 20) Outside Influences

Session 10: Pages 30-33 (Slides 31-52) What to Do, List of What to do, Say No to Pressure, The Potter & Vase story/demonstration/video, Save Your Heart for Your Mate, Be Mature and Choose Abstinence

 

(H)  teaches the importance of attaining self-sufficiency before engaging in sexual activity:

Session 4 – 9: Page 12 Slide 13) Social Needs, Page 21 (Slides 22-23) teen/single parenting
